In a low-light environment, the side with the lower light intensity (typically the side that is dimmer) appears transparent, allowing you to see through the glass to the brighter side.

In a high-light environment, the brighter side reflects most of the light, making the mirror opaque or reflective to those on the brighter side, while those on the dimmer side will be able to see through.

This phenomenon occurs because the mirror’s coating is designed to reflect light strongly from the brighter side, while allowing the dimmer side to pass through. For effective use, the reflective side of the one-way mirror needs to face the brighter light source.
